Visit this Office if:

You need to obtain building, mechanical, or sign permits
You need to make inquiries regarding zoning or building construction
You need to verify zoning compliance on a property that you are planning to purchase
You need to check the complaint history and outstanding complaints of a property that you may buy

Tasks:

The Building Department performs the following tasks:

Issuance of building and mechanical permits
Enforcement of building and mechanical codes
Enforcement of property maintenance code and various city ordinances regarding property maintenance, and public nuisance (junk and debris, long grass, dilapidated buildings)
Administration and enforcement of city zoning ordinances

The Building Department also does the following:

Reviews plans for compliance with applicable building, mechanical and zoning codes prior to permit issuance
Issuance of sign permits and enforcement of sign ordinances
Repair and maintenance of traffic signal control equipment
Maintenance of control equipment for downtown decorative lighting
Management of Sanderson Field (airport).
Provide staff support for zoning, construction, and existing structures board of appeals.

The Zoning Board of Appeals meeting schedule and notification are such that appeal requests are heard 15 to 45 days following the date of application, depending on scheduled monthly meeting dates. A schedule of application deadlines and meeting dates is available through the Building Department
